Fareham man admits strangling, biting and spitting at a police officer in Gosport

A MAN has admitted biting, spitting at and strangling a police officer in a savage assault.

Louis Barnes, 31, of Highlands Road, Fareham, pleaded guilty to a string of offences following an incident in Gosport.

Shortly after 8pm on Tuesday police responded to reports of anti-social behaviour and an assault at a flat in South Street.

An officer arrived at the scene and after finding Barnes, he was then spat at, bitten on the face and strangled.

He was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital following the assault and is being supported by Hampshire Constabulary.

Barnes appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today and pleaded guilty to the following offences:

- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm- Contravening a requirement as to the restriction of movement during an emergency period - Contrary to regulations 6, 9(1)(b) & (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020- Common assault- Using threatening or abusive words/behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress

He will be sentenced on May 15.
