Paul Joel, from Fratton, was among those who assisted her and went to Queen Alexandra Hospital himself with a broken leg after helping to lift the car.

The 42-year-old computer technician said: ‘I saw the accident happen and I just ran from my car to help her.

‘The car wheel was on her chest so we lifted the car to move it off her. It was really bad and she looked in a bad way. The car was crushing her.

‘I couldn’t believe how many people were just driving past but I think maybe they couldn’t see what happened because it was on a turning.

‘When the car got moved it went back down on my leg a little bit. I have had an x-ray and I broke my femur and my ankle. I am alright though and the important thing is that woman is alive.’

South Central Ambulance Service took the woman to Southampton General Hospital.

Anita Mills, a passing off-duty nursing associate at Queen Alexandra Hospital, was first to treat her at the scene.

A male community nurse and a paramedic who were also passing stopped to help.

Anita, 50, who works on ward D8, said: ‘All three of us treated the motorcyclist prior to the ambulance arriving.

‘I also, once having helped to move the motorcyclist onto the stretcher, went to assist Mr Joel.’

Ms Mills, who graduated from Solent University days before lockdown began in March, added: ‘Without the funding provided by QA I certainly wouldn't have been able to go to university, or have been able to assist with the injured rider.’
