Two flats in Burney House, South Street, have been closed by Gosport Borough Council following a spate of drug-related activity and anti-social behaviour.

With the flats closed after approval from Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court, the council is now looking to permanently evict the residents, who could be fined or jailed if they enter the apartments.

Pictures taken inside one of the flats showed the shocking living conditions, with the bathroom and living room full of junk.

Cllr Graham Burgess, chairman of the council's community board, said: ‘This is a great result for people living nearby who have had to put up with this behaviour.

‘We will not tolerate such anti-social activities, and I'm glad the court agreed these orders were needed.’

Julie Smith, the council's head of housing, added: ‘We're pleased that the residents and the wider community will get some much-needed respite.’

The application for a closure order was worked on as a joint project between Gosport Borough Council and Hampshire Constabulary.

Inspector Matt Wake from Gosport said: ‘I hope this closure reassures the local community that we will not tolerate drug-related offending, and the anti-social behaviour that comes with it, in our communities.

‘Working with our partners in the local council, we will do everything within our power to stop it.

‘If you are concerned about drug supply and anti-social behaviour in your area, please report this to the Gosport neighbourhood policing team via 101.’
