Hampshire police dish out nearly 200 fines to people flouting lockdown rules

NEARLY 200 fines have been dished out by Hampshire police to people breaking new coronavirus lockdown rules.

The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) released figures revealing it had handed out 197 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) between March 27 and April 27.

It comes as police slapped offenders with 8,877 penalties in England.

Police were given powers to issue £60 fines to those flouting the measures.

NPCC Chair Martin Hewitt said: ‘As the latest provisional figures on the number of fines issued show, the vast majority of people continue to do the right thing, staying at home in order to protect the NHS and help save lives.

‘I want to thank people for continuing to follow the regulations – I recognise it’s not easy and that this is a challenging time for us all.

‘Our approach of – engage, explain and encourage, and only as a last resort, enforce – will continue. It is working.’
