Hampshire's '˜worrying' level of registered sex offenders is revealed

NEW figures which have revealed the number of sex offenders in the area have been branded '˜worrying' by a child protection charity.

There are 1,732 registered sex offenders across the Hampshire and Isle of Wight area.

The statistics, released by the Ministry of Justice, show there are 101 registered sex offenders per 100,000 population.

The revelation has concerned the NSPCC, with a spokeswoman saying: ‘It’s good that more of these individuals are being put on the list of registered sex offenders but it’s worrying that this is such a prolific problem, as many of these offenders will be paedophiles.’

Since 2006 the number of registered sex offenders has risen by 73 per cent with the latest figures showing almost one in every 1,000 people in England and Wales is on the register, the charity added.

The spokeswoman added a trend towards abuse victims coming forward was ‘encouraging’ but said: ‘There is no room for complacency and it is important to report signs of sexual abuse when they occur.’
