Homeless man must pay £50 over arrest

A MAN got himself arrested as he '˜wanted a bed for the night'.

Homeless Matthew Ryan, 37, was ordered to leave Guildhall Walk in Portsmouth by police on January 16. Officers had been responding to a separate incident.

But they noticed he was acting ‘oddly’ and issued a dispersal notice ordering him to leave.

Portsmouth magistrates heard Ryan returned to get his belongings, discovered they were wet so wanted a bed and said to police ‘arrest me’.

Ryan pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a section 35 direction. He must pay £50 costs and got a six-month conditional discharge.
