Jail for Kevin Lambert who bit police officer and spat at another PC in Portsmouth

Kevin Lambert admitted two charges of assaulting an emergency worker on March 19 in Commercial Road, Portsmouth.

The 34-year-old, of Milton Road, Portsmouth, was jailed for five and four months' terms consecutively - totalling a nine-month sentence.

Portsmouth’s Chief Inspector Rob Mitchell said: ‘The behaviour of Kevin Lambert towards our officers that day was shocking and unacceptable.

‘We take a zero-tolerance approach to assaults on our officers, and do not accept that it is simply part of the job.

‘No emergency worker should turn up to work and expect to come to harm.

‘As a force we will continue to work with the CPS to ensure that those responsible for these awful attacks are brought to justice.’

District judge Gary Lucie jailed him at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court. Lambert was jailed as ‘any assault on police officers is taken seriously by the court, particularly so during the Covid-19 pandemic’.

Lambert must pay a £122 victim surcharge.

Hampshire Police Federation chairman Alex Charge, who represents the rank-and-file, added: ‘Assaults on officers are simply not acceptable and a prison sentence should be the outcome.

‘I am glad that we have seen custodial sentences for those who spit at police officers, during this Covid crisis.

‘I would like to see prison as the starting point for people who assault officers it gives a clear message to those who assault officers that there are consequences to this behaviour.’

Lambert also admitted resisting a police officer, assault by beating on a woman and causing fear of violence at Fratton train station on March 18.
