Man arrested after two cyclists seriously injured in Fareham released from custody

A MAN who was arrested following a crash on Sunday has been released from custody by police.

On Sunday, August 2, police were called to the Newgate Lane flyover at 7.28pm, after a Volkswagen Crafter collided with two cyclists.

The cyclists, a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man both from Paulsgrove, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

A 33-year-old man from Gosport was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drugs and driving whilst unfit through drink, and failing to stop after a collision.

Police say he has since been released from custody, but remains under investigation.

Acting Sergeant Robin Tompkins said: ‘I have been to countless serious injury collision but this incident has to be one of the worst I have seen in many years.

‘Due to the nature of the incident we are also concerned for the welfare of any witnesses, who may wish to seek support from our partner agencies.’

Officers have made a number of enquiries and are now turning to the public for help, particularly with identifying the driver of the Volkswagen.

A spokeswoman from the force said: ‘If you were driving a white Volkswagen Crafter on Newgate Lane at the relevant time, or you know someone who was, please contact us so we can establish the full circumstances of the collision.’

Anyone with information is asked to call Hampshire Constabulary on 101, quoting the crime reference number 44200290626.
