Man charged with Gosport burglary after theft of cash and jewellery

A MAN has been charged following the burglary of a Gosport flat and the theft of £7,000 worth of goods.

It was reported to police that a flat on Minnitt Road was illegally entered and cash was stolen along with jewellery, designer handbags, an iPad and a mobile phone.

The incident took place between 2.20pm and 2.30pm on November 1.

A statement from Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘Following an investigation led by the Operation Hawk team, Aaron James Smethurst, 35, of Bemisters Lane in Gosport, was charged with burglary.’

He was remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today (Friday November 13).

As part of this investigation, police also previously charged Curtis Coombes, 34, formerly of South Street in Gosport, with burglary.

He is due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on November 20.

In addition, a 27-year-old woman from Gosport was given a conditional caution for obstructing police.
