MP celebrates drop in crime in six years despite surge

AN MP has hailed a reduction in crime in the last five years '“ despite a surge last year.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Fareham MP Suella Fernandes said she was ‘stunned’ by Labour criticism about police cuts that she said ignored a 25 per cent drop in crime since 2010.

‘In Hampshire, my county, we have seen an 11 per cent drop in crime over the past year alone, making a fall of more than 30 per cent since 2010,’ she said.

However, as reported in The News, police-recorded crime in Hampshire has increased to 121,250 for the year ending June 2015, up from 102,412 on the previous year. Hampshire had the biggest increase. Sex offences nearly doubled from 1,963 to 3,858. At the time of the figures being released in October, Chief Superintendent Jason Hogg said there had been improvements to crime recording.
