A crew from Fareham Fire Station was called to the flat in Bedford Drive, Park Gate, around 7pm this evening after reports of a fire.
It is believed a candle near the boiler was the cause.
Firefighter Matt Rolfe said: ‘We were called to a flat in Park Gate this evening.
‘A candle near the boiler started the fire and caused a lot of smoke damage. Luckily the lady and her children evacuated from the flat and there were no injuries.’
The fire was put out using two breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
The crew also want to mention crew manager Ian Cambridge, who attended the incident, for his long career as he is due to retire soon.
