The incidents come just days after a 25-year-old man from Havant died in a crash on the stretch of road.

Sussex Roads Police added: ‘Even more disappointing is the fact that as each one put their foot down they passed signs from a crash earlier this week where a young man lost his life.’

A black Volkswagen Golf was travelling east towards Chichester when it crashed into the central reservation at 11.40pm on Wednesday.

The driver – a 25-year-old man from Havant – was pronounced dead at scene.

The passenger – a 19-year-old man from Havant – suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The crash shocked the community, with tributes pouring in from across Havant.

Havant mayor Councillor Prad Bains said: ‘It’s so sad when things like this happen, especially to somebody so young. My thoughts are with the families and friends.

‘We were all so sorry to hear about this – it’s a tragic loss to the borough and for me hits really close to home.

‘My thanks also go to the emergency service personnel who attended, and will have done everything they can to help these men. Their swift action was incredibly important.’

A 20-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both from Havant, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

They have since been released on conditional bail until March 10, pending further enquiries.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours while investigations were carried out.

Police have not named the man killed in the crash and the woman hurt.
