The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Prad Bains, told The News: ‘It’s so sad when things like this happen, especially to somebody so young. My thoughts are with the families and friends.

‘We were all so sorry to hear about this – it’s a tragic loss to the borough and for me hits really close to home.

‘My thanks also go to the emergency service personnel who attended, and will have done everything they can to help these men. Their swift action was incredibly important.’

On The News’ breaking news Facebook group, the death of this young man has struck an emotional chord with many readers.

Denise Cornish said: ‘My prayers go out for the family and friends for their loss, and for the injured teenager.’

Highways England said recovery and collision clear-up work is ongoing along the A27, so the road closure between Havant Road and Fishbourne Roundabout is set to remain in place.

Sussex police this morning said: ‘The road is likely to be closed in both directions between Fishbourne and Emsworth roundabouts for some time whilst the investigation takes place, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

‘Police are appealing for witnesses and are particularly interested to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of the collision or the Golf being driven prior to the collision.

‘Police would also like to hear from the driver of a red Audi A3 who may be able to assist with the investigation.’
