The vehicle – described by police as ‘medium-sized’ – continued north along Heritage Way towards the A32 Fareham Road, Hampshire police said.

Parents of children attending nearby Elson Junior School spoke of their shock at the incident.

One mum who did not want to be named has a daughter in Year 5. She said: ‘It is an awful thing to happen so close to a school.

‘The fact the driver did not stop to check on the young girl makes it even worse.

‘With both Elson schools and Brune Park School nearby, children are travelling to school along that route and drivers should be more careful.’

Another parent added: ‘I am shocked that a young girl was hit. That route always seems so safe.’

Paula Lockwood lives on Elson Lane. She said: ‘So many children travel to and from schools around here that drivers should be aware. I hope the girl is okay.

‘It is horrible that the driver carried on.’
