Police called to reports of wine bar open on Hayling Island

A WINE bar believed to have been opened for a charity event was shut by police following social distancing concerns.

Police officers on Hayling Island received a ‘large number of reports’ that there were people gathering outside a wine bar in Elm Grove yesterday afternoon.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, bars, pubs, clubs and other hospitality venues have been closed for the forseeable future by the government.

It is believed by Hampshire Constabulary that this was a charity event, with people queuing outside the establishment.

Officers advised those inside and the venue was closed.

Posting on Twitter, Hayling Island Police said: ‘We have received a large number of calls regarding the wine bar in Elm Grove.

‘We have attended and the bar is now closed.’

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that no further action had been taken by police regarding the incident.
