Portsmouth baby death: Three women arrested released under investigation

Three women arrested on suspicion of conspiring to murder an infant girl have been released under investigation.

Hampshire police’s major crime team were granted an extra 12 hours to quiz the Portsmouth women, 39, 21 and 20. The women were arrested yesterday morning.

On the same day a search was being carried out at a property in All Saints Road, Buckland, just a minute's walk to the site at the corner of Victoria Street and Old Commercial Road where the infant girl was found dead.

As reported, she was found wrapped in a yellow towel at 6.18am on January 25 near author Charles Dickens’ birthplace.

Tonight Hampshire police has confirmed all three women were released from custody under investigation.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm the three women arrested yesterday have been released from custody but remain under investigation while our enquiries continue.

‘As we are sure people will appreciate, this is a complex investigation and our work continues to ensure all is done to get the right outcome for all those involved.’
