The woman, who has asked not be named, was walking Jackson in Cosham Park when the attack happened.

She said: ‘I saw the dog running towards us and I initially though it was coming across to be playful. However, as it approached I realised it was being aggressive and so I stood in front of my granddaughter. It was then that it took Jackson by the throat and wouldn’t let go.’

Eventually the owner of the dog, which was said to be a Jack Russell crossbreed, and a man from a nearby building site manged to free Jackson from the jaws of the other dog.

The woman added: ‘The owner was apologetic but the attack lasted several minutes and was distressing for my granddaughter who witnessed it all. We took Jackson to the vets and he has been given a course of anti-inflammatory tablets and antibiotics. I was worried for my granddaughter’s safety at the time.’

After the incident took place on Friday afternoon at about 3.15pm, Jackson is said to be ‘on the mend but a little subdued’. He is also more wary of other dogs.

The lady added: ‘The dog was so out of control and vicious that I want to make other people aware of what happened. There are children who use the park and I’m concerned that one of them could be attacked next.’

The incident has been reported to the police.

A statement from Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘The caller to our control room reported that her beagle had been attacked by another dog while she was walking it through Cosham Park. The dog has run across the park and attacked her dog.

‘Due to the lack of details we are not able to investigate further but have made local officers aware and suggested the caller also gets in contact with the local council dog warden.’

Jackons’s owner said: ‘I have spoken to the council’s dog warden and he said any dog which is so aggressive should wear a muzzle.’
