Southampton FC striker and ex-Liverpool England international Danny Ings faces M27 speeding charge

Hampshire police allege Southampton FC striker Ings, 29, averaged 60mph in a 50mph temporary speed restricted area at 3.29am on February 3 this year.

He is said to have been travelling eastbound between junctions four and five, where Highways England is carrying out roadworks to make a smart motorway.

No plea has been entered in the case.

In court papers seen by The News police case officer Angela Todd said: ‘A conditional offer of a fixed penalty was sent on (April 9).

‘The defendant has failed to comply with the requirements of these disposal options.’

Roadworks are set to be in place on the M27 between junctions four and 11, for Fareham, with Highways England’s £244m work due to be completed in spring next year.

Yellow hawk average speed cameras were installed with a 50mph speed restriction in place.

Some10,204 drivers were caught speeding between junction four and five of the M27 last year, police figures show.

Ings, who has appeared for England three times since moving up from the under-21 squad, lives in Winchester and has one year left on his contract with Saints.

The forward scored twice against Pompey for Saints in the third round of the Carabao League Cup on September 24, 2019, with his side seizing a 4-0 victory.

He signed for Liverpool in 2015, playing in the UEFA Europa league in September of that year.

He suffered injury to his right knee against Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 and spent 11 months recuperating after surgery.

Ings, who played for AFC Bournemouth and Burnley earlier in his career, signed for Saints in 2018 for a reported £18m fee.

National newspapers reported he has been linked with a move to Spurs but in recent days that is said to have fallen away.

He contracted Covid-19 in mid-January this year, missing his Premier League side’s game against Leicester.

He went on to score on February 11 against Wolverhampton where his team won 2-0 in the FA Cup 5th round.
