Southsea GP Rumi Chhapia charged with fraud by abuse of position after NHS contractor funds moved into individual’s private account

Rumi Chhapia, 45, has been charged with fraud by abuse of position after detectives investigated a report of theft in Portsmouth.

This development relates to joint investigation with the NHS into a report that funds had been transferred from the Portsmouth Primary Care Alliance into an individual's private account.

The alliance reported the loss to Hampshire police and the NHS Counter Fraud Authority after the alleged theft came to light on September 28.

The alliance is made up of GP practices and holds NHS contracts for healthcare services in Portsmouth.

The News reported in October that a man had attended a police station voluntarily and was interviewed under caution.

Chhapia was a director of Portsmouth Primary Care Alliance until he resigned on October 1 last year, according to Companies House records. He used to work at the Portsdown Group Practice.

Chhapia, of Lennox Road North, Southsea, will appear before Portsmouth magistrates on September 16.
