Waterlooville travellers who "packed" small space leave area

Travellers had been at the site for a week

Travellers who pitched up on a small grass space near Waterlooville town centre have now left, it has been confirmed.

A flock of around 10 vehicles turned up at the site off Hambledon Road at the Berewood Estate on Thursday July 2 before expanding to over 20 on Tuesday to leave the area “packed”.

One local had said: “It probably now exceeds 20 caravans, motorhomes, trucks, wood shredder and horse. It’s almost packed now and has more than doubled in size.”

Havant Borough Council previously said they had “no jurisdiction” and were not able to get involved with the eviction process as the land belonged to the developer Grainger.

On Wednesday afternoon a spokesperson for Grainger said the travellers had left. “I can confirm they have now gone and the site is clear,” he said.

The spokesperson previously said there had been “very little disruption to the development” before adding: “Once the site is clear, we will carry out any necessary clean up works before continuing with the development programme.”

Travellers who camped on a field by Havant Rugby Club also left the area on Monday.
