Defence spend pledge secure

That’s the message defence minister Philip Dunne gave to MPs in the wake of the EU referendum result.

The defence procurement minister stressed the government would still fulfil its pledge to spend at least two per cent of the nation’s income on bolstering Britain’s armed forces following Thursday’s vote to leave the European Union.

It came after Labour’s former shadow defence minister Emily Thornberry the nation had to be ‘very careful’ in achieving the pledge ‘as there may well be a recession given the Brexit vote’.

Mr Dunne said: ‘We have a clear commitment to meet the Nato defence spending pledge and that is what we will do.’
