Havant church to live-stream VJ Day commemorations on Facebook

A CHURCH service marking the 75th anniversary of VJ Day will be live-streamed on Facebook.

Social media users can watch the commemoration as it takes place at St Faith’s Church in West Street, Havant at 9.55am on Saturday.

Known as Victory over Japan Day, the anniversary marks 75 years since Japan’s Second World War surrender – ultimately bringing the conflict to an end in 1945.

Saturday’s event will be attended by the mayor of Havant, Councillor Prad Bains, Cllr Diana Patrick, Havant MP Alan Mak and representatives from the Havant branch of the Royal British Legion.

Members of the public can not attend because of social distancing rules, but may go to a short ceremony at the church’s outside war memorial at 11am.

This will be followed by a ringing of the church's bells.

Cllr Bains said: ‘Whilst VE day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, thousands of British and Commonwealth personnel were still fighting in the Far East.

‘Many who fought in the South East Asia and Pacific commands considered themselves as the ‘forgotten army’.

‘VJ Day not only marks the end of the Second World War but highlights their sacrifice and tells their story.

‘On Saturday we mark the 75th anniversary of VJ day and I look forward to you joining us in commemorating the event by attending the socially distanced public ceremony or by watching the live stream.’
