Now most of the talk about the first day of the Battle of the Somme has passed I must guide you to the First World War Remembrance Centre at Fort Widley on Portsdown Hill.

This superb museum is packed from floor to ceiling with artefacts from the period and much of the material may be touched. The full four years of the war can be seen in detail.

Many artefacts from the battlefields are on display including weapons, helmets and personal items the soldiers left behind in the mud.

If you are lucky, Charles Haskell, the brilliant and enthusiastic director and curator will be on hand to talk to you. If not, one of his dedicated band of volunteers will do just as good a job.
