Eddystone: birthplace for thousands of Portsmouth children

At last! We made it. Matt Tozer will be delighted. It was he who started it all two months ago with a simple request: did any reader have a picture of Eddystone Maternity Home?

He was born in the Festing Road, Southsea, building, in 1965 and wanted to fill the gap in his life history.

I made several appeals here and although we got close once we didn’t have a picture of the entire building.

Now a female Remember When reader from Locks Heath, who wishes to remain anonymous, has come up with this series of pictures taken from an Eddystone promotional booklet. It is a building she will never forget, for she gave birth to five children there, the first in 1952.

Even Dame Vera Lynn got in on the act, pictured holding the 1,000th baby to be born in the Southsea maternity home.

And mention of cod liver oil and orange juice will bring memories fooding back for many of you.
