Legendary goalkeeper Alan Knight was paid tribute to by supporters at Fratton Park as his family laid wreaths on the pitch ahead of kick-off against Cardiff.
A minute’s silence was held for the goalkeeper who died on Tuesday, September 1 after battling prostate cancer. Both sets of supporters paid their respects to the man who made an incredible 801 appearances for Pompey, the longest by a goalkeeper at a single club.
The centre circle was emblazoned with a motif showing a kit with number 1 on the back and ‘legend’ written above it. Ahead of the minute’s silence, members of Knight’s family were joined by Pompey’s chief executive to lay wreaths on the pitch.
It was an impeccably held minute’s silence with Pompey fans chanting ‘there is only one Alan Knight’ after the referee called it to an end.
It was a chance for fans to show their appreciation to a man that was known for much more than what he did on the pitch. Amongst people in the city he was known as someone that always had time to say hello, stop for a photograph or give an autograph.
From player to coach to ambassador, Knight was an ever-present fixture at the club with his service and community work seeing him awarded with an MBE and the freedom of the city.
