The name Silhouette can be traced back to the mid-18th century to a French finance minister under Louis XV named Etienne de Silhouette (1709 – 1767).

He would produce wonderful little images with a remarkable resemblance to his subject, with just skill and a pair of scissors within minutes, therefore this art form was named after him.
