Litter picking group 'shocked' as its first event finds 20 litres of radiator fluid on Warsash beach

A group of 12 litter pickers attended the first meeting of Mundo Limpio – which means ‘Clean World’ in Spanish – in Strawberry Field, in Warsash, on Monday July 6.
The group was shocked by the amount of rubbish collected in just an hour of scouring the field and shoreline, according to founder Michael Hill.

Hide AdThe 27-year-old said: ‘I think the radiator oil was the most bizarre find – we wouldn’t have have expected to see that on the shore line.
‘We think it may have fallen off a boat.
‘One of the most concerning finds was the number of nos canisters – there were about 30 of them.’
The littering of metallic nitrous oxide canisters - used to administer the gas as a form of psychoactive high – has become a persistent and widespread problem across Portsmouth, as The News reported last month.
Now Michael hopes the group will meet once a month to combat the amount of rubbish left on the site.

Hide AdHe said: ‘I though that it was litter that had collected over a long period of time. But one member went back a few days later and collected six bags of rubbish.’
The Locks Heath resident was inspired to create the group after he lost his job at a catering company due to the coronavirus pandemic and noticed the amount of litter in the area.
He said: ‘I have always been environmentally aware. I I thought having lost my job I would try to do something positive with my time.
‘After the clean-up I wrote to the council, and we have been given six litter pickers, six pairs of gloves, and some council branded bin bags.’
