Thousands of Portsmouth homes to get food waste bins - here's all the streets involved

The announcement by Portsmouth City Council will see more than 10,000 homes being added to the 23,500 households already up and running.

The initiative will see food waste recycled to be used as energy, fuel and fertiliser. The council decided to target the issue of food waste after analysis showed 40 per cent of black bag waste consists of food.

Cllr Dave Ashmore, the council's cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: ‘We are continuing at pace to increase Portsmouth's recycling efforts. The food waste trial will make a really big difference.

‘Food waste makes up a huge amount of people's weekly rubbish collection and the up-take of the trial so far has been fantastic and we will continue working hard to roll out the scheme city-wide from 2022 and hope to see the city's recycling rate push through the 30 per cent mark.

‘We recently ran the food waste action week campaign to raise more awareness of the impact of food waste.’

Food waste is placed in specific ‘caddies’ and a staggering 1,557 tonnes of food waste has been collected since the start of the trial in February. The initiative is to be rolled out in stages with houses in phases one and two already operational. Further details, including the areas involved, can be found on the council's website.

To begin with, 2,700 households will be added to the scheme, with a further 10,000 in September and another 10,000 later down the line.
