Virtual Green Jobs For All event set to talk economic recovery and sustainable jobs for Havant
A virtual event highlighting the need for green jobs in Havant is set to take place next week.
Members of the public are invited to join the conversation at the Green Jobs For All meeting on Wednesday, March 24.
Co-hosted by Havant Climate Alliance and Havant Green New Deal, the event will hear speakers discuss the importance of investing locally in green jobs to help the economic recovery and create sustainable jobs for the future.
Margaret Lockyer is a member of Havant Green New Deal and of Havant Climate Alliance.
She said: ‘We are trying to encourage green recovery and investing in green jobs for the benefit of the economy and the climate.
‘People will be able to hear a varied set of ideas, and learn about what a green job is and what they could mean for the people of Havant.
‘There is such a lot of work that needs doing, it’s a long term investment that will pay off.
‘We want green jobs for people doing work that the community really needs over the coming years.’
Speakers will include Laura Ho from the national office of Green New Deal UK, as well as Gary Morton, chair of the Havant branch of Unison.
Margaret said: ‘We want to get a trade union’s view on what needs to be done to create more green jobs - so many people have lost their jobs over this time, and we want to see more investment in new and better jobs.’
Cllrs Julie Thain-Smith and Lulu Bowerman from Havant Borough Council will also be speaking.
Margaret added: ‘We will push the councillors on what they are doing - Havant Borough Council is one of the few councils who haven’t announced a climate emergency, and we want them to be open about what they’re doing to encourage green businesses within Havant and encourage green policies.’
After the speakers’ presentations, the meeting will be opened to the audience for questions.
Margaret said: ‘It would be great to have young people come along to find out what could be out there for them - it’s their future.’
‘We have a vision of Havant being a prosperous place to live, a great place to live and work.’
The virtual event will take place from 7pm to 8pm. Visit the Green New Deal Havant Facebook page for joining information or visit actionnetwork.org/events/havant-green-jobs-for-all.
Green New Deal UK will be releasing data in April to show how many green jobs could be created in each local area across the country, and Havant Green New Deal wants to make sure that everyone in Havant Borough can hear this figure.
The News has launched the Going for Green campaign to highlight how everyone can help in the effort to combat climate change, from individuals to organisations. It is being run in conjunction with Portsmouth Climate Action Board.
