Fire causes 'extensive' damage to residential garage in Fareham

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze believed to have been started by a battery charger in a residential garage in Newgate Lane this evening.

Crews from stations in Fareham, Portchester, and Cosham attended the scene at the property on Newgate Lane, off Newgate Lane East, at 8.10pm.

It took the crews more than 45 minutes to deal with the blaze using breath apparatus and a hosereel.

The owner of the property called the the emergency services and suffered light heat-induced injures to his hands, according to a firefighter at the scene.

He said: ‘The man suffered very light burns – not enough to warrant treatment at a hospital or from an ambulance.

‘The damage to the garage was pretty extensive.’

The owner told fire crews he believes the fire was caused by a battery charger in the garage.
