Fire crew set to call on Commercial Road shops to inspect fire doors

FIREFIGHTERS are set to take to Commercial Road to put businesses through their paces about fire safety.

A crew from Southsea fire station along with a community safety team will be speaking to business owners along the main shopping street tomorrow to offer support about how to maintain fire doors, and to let workers know how effective their fire doors are.

The firefighters will be carrying out the work as part of fire door safety week.

Katie Cornhill, business fire safety inspector for Southsea said: ‘A fire door can only protect you and your business if it is properly installed, managed or maintained.

‘The owner, manager or anyone with control of a property has a responsibility to tenants and employees to maintain fire doors, ensure they are being used correctly and that they are not badly fitted, damaged or wedged open inappropriately.

‘That said, every person using a building should consider their own safety and that of others and report any concerns.’

Rhoda Joseph, centre director for the Cascades Shopping Centre said: ‘We’re delighted to be supporting the fire station during fire door safety week.’
