HMS Royal Oak

A date for your diary next Friday. I know we lost many ships and men during the Second World War, but the sinking of the battleship HMS Royal Oak is always poignant.

On October 14, 1939 the German U-boat U-47 managed to enter Scapa Flow, Orkney, and put torpedoes into the ship.

A total of 833 men and boys were killed or later died of their wounds.

A protected war grave, she lies almost upside down in 100ft of water. Her hull is just 16ft beneath the surface.
