Huge maypole is ready to be shipped up north

ONE of the largest maypoles in England is ready to be shipped 250 miles up north.

Built by Hayling Island boat builder Little Ship Projects Ltd, the huge structure, pictured, is made of British Columbian Pine and is 86 feet long and weighs 2.5 tonnes.

The pole will replace the existing pole in Otley, need Leeds, which was rotting.

A protective coating system of marine paint should ensure a long life for the pole, currently at Chichester marina.

Peter Webb, from the firm, said: ‘It’s wonderful that we got the job.’
