ARMY enthusiasts from all over the south headed down to get their chance to step back in time to a time of war at the Solent Overlord military spectacular yesterday..

The Lawns off Forest Road in Denmead became a military encampment as more than 500 re-enactors sought to provide thousands of visitors with a glimpse of what life would have been like in wartime.

Armed vehicles and tanks came to the fore in a military re-enactment performance for the cheering spectators and the day was also rounded off with the firing of a 155mm howitzer.

Tim Kimber, brought his family of five down from Fair Oak for the event and was impressed by what was on display.

He said: ‘I think it all looks really fantastic.

‘I know the kids have loved the chance to be able to see tanks out on the grass in real life rather than in a video game.’

His son, Daniel, 13 added: ‘I’m really enjoying it. There’s been lots of things to do and it’s cool to get up close to all the tanks.’

Martin Lewin headed down from Guildford in Surrey to get a glimpse of the living history segments of the show that saw re-enactors dressed in full gear and camped in tents.

He said: ‘It’s quite interesting to have a look around and see the work that’s gone into everything. I’m a big fan of military history and having the chance to see it all being remade in the flesh was something I just could not miss out on.’

Around 350 military vehicles were on display for the public.

There were also dozens of stalls selling military apparel with some selling artefacts such as bullet shells and helmets from the First World War.
