Jobs lost over strike
In February 1916, some 250 employees of Portsmouth Corporation went on strike. They had demanded a bonus but it was refused.
The essential services of the town had to continue of course and the Committee it affected were ordered to engage other men which they did. Perhaps the first blacklegs.
They were promised permanent employment. Within a fortnight the strike collapsed. Many of the strikers failed to obtain their former positions as they were indeed, taken over by
men employed over the strike period.
