Love is Blind is cheesy but rather interesting | Cheryl Gibbs

During our midnight feeds, Matt and I have been watching a new American series on Netflix called Love is Blind.

For the first few weeks individuals do no see each other’s faces but develop an emotional connection by communicating in private pods. The premise is they fall in love without knowing what each other looks like. To cut a long story short, one of them proposes if they feel they've fallen in love and the jeopardy is whether they go ahead with the wedding. At first I thought it was a load of old tripe but it’s actually quite an interesting experiment. It's a silly series really but if you can get past the American cheesiness it's actually quite good.

Our first month of being parents has simply flown by

This is Matt’s first week back at work after being off for nearly a month since Harley came into the world, and, my goodness, it has been a shock to the system!

They say nothing can prepare you for when you have a baby and that’s absolutely true.

But I think I was cushioned a bit by having Matt at home for so long.

We’re mixed feeding Harley because she’s had so many issues with her weight dropping and my breast milk just wasn’t enough to sustain her rather large appetite – clearly, she takes after her father.

Matt was doing the bottle part of the feeding routine and when he went back to work I had to step in and do that too. It's been absolutely exhausting.

This week I’ve had Harley strapped to one breast, while attempting – albeit unsuccessfully at times – to prepare the bottle while she’s quite literally attached.

It’s been tough, but we’re getting there.

I think the hardest part of looking after a newborn is the process of how long everything takes.

Altogether the feeds are about two hours, start to finish.

Mixed feeding is difficult because we’re doing breast and bottle so you don’t get the perk of exclusively doing either one or the other.

But I want to breastfeed as long as I can, especially as she was a pre-term baby so the health benefits are huge – or so I’m told.

We’ve nearly made it through the first week and I’d love to say that it happened without tears, but the moment Matt walked in from work on Monday I burst out crying and I couldn’t really explain why.

I’ll put it down to hormones, though I wonder how long that excuse will last.

It really has been such a joy bonding with Harley and getting to know her, but it’s also a far cry from how my days used to be.

I think it’s important that us women, us new mothers, talk openly and honestly about the trials and tribulations of having a baby.

Harley turned one month yesterday and the saying ‘time really does fly’ is so true – where on earth has the last month gone?

I’m trying hard not to panic but it’s difficult to stay calm

Not an hour goes by without a new case of Coronavirus being discovered somewhere in the world.

It is truly scary, especially when you hear of pupils in local schools self-isolating themselves at home for two weeks.

I’m trying not to overthink it because you can drive yourself crazy by turning over in your mind what might or might not happen.

But, let’s face it, it’s certainly a worrying time.

I’ve heard that supermarkets are selling out of a lot of provisions as people stockpile in case they become housebound or the virus gets worse.

That’s something I have not considered doing yet but I am beginning to worry!
