She had thought he had a plan in place to meet the costs. But that wasn't the case and, with neither her nor Ed's family able to afford a funeral, a closed service was looking like the only answer.

Until, that is, a desperate Donna turned to social media in her hour of need '“ and was overwhelmed by people's kindness.

Now she has talked about her gratitude after £2,340 was raised in less than 24 hours, meaning that she will be able to give her beloved husband a proper farewell, surrounded by family and friends.

It's a great example of the power of crowdfunding, how Facebook can be a force for good and also of the enduring generosity of spirit that exists in our city and in today's society.

People began donating after she posted on her Facebook page, giving what they could after being moved by Donna's plight. One person pledged £150. Where Donna would have found it impossible to raise the money by herself, many hands made it happen.

Those who donated were happy to help and it moved Donna to tears. She said: '˜I want to thank the people of Portsmouth from the bottom of my heart. It's really overwhelming and I am so grateful. It is just amazing for people to be so generous and do this.'

We agree, but equally we're not surprised by the response of people. That's because Portsmouth folk have always looked after their own. When the chips are really down, they come through. This was yet another heartwarming example.      

All those who took time to donate and help Donna in her hour of need should feel very proud today.
