We can all take pride in helping Tom Prince Cancer Trust hit a magic million

But those same people can now take some solace in the incredible feat of fundraising that has been completed in his name.

In the 12 years since the football-mad teenager’s sad death to cancer, the trust that bears his name has been busy raising cash to help fight the disease that killed Tom.

And now it has hit the magic million-pound mark.

Even when that figure sounded like a nice round number plucked out of the air, Tom’s family never gave up hope that they would one day hit the total.

We here at The News are proud to have known Tom and been backing the trust since its start.

And when Blue Day began in 2008, with the football club riding high during a semi-final FA Cup run, we threw our full weight behind it.

When Pompey went on to win the cup, another Blue Day benefitted from the feelgood factor in the city.

It has since become a regular fixture in the calendar – taking place each Friday before the final home game of the season.

Although times may have changed dramatically since then for the club and the city in general, friends, fans and supporters of the charity have dug deep each May.

Dozens of businesses, schools, community groups and others have signed up each year to support the cause.

It has been incredible to watch the total raised grow ever-closer to that £1m mark.

We salute Tom’s family, Clinton, Adele and Emma, for their fantastic efforts.

Their orange trust shirts have become a common sight at events all over the region. While many have helped them along the way, they have been the driving force behind a fantastic achievement.
