It follows an earlier video on social media that showed an officer writhing in agony on the ground “screaming” just feet from a man detained near the back of Farm Foods, close to Clifton Street, around 1.30pm.
A police spokesperson said: “At around 1.30pm, police made attempts to stop a man behind Farm Foods in Fratton. An officer was then reportedly assaulted, and suffered an ankle injury requiring hospital treatment.
“Police arrested the 45-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody at this time.”
A white van was reportedly seized at the scene and the officer was taken to hospital.
