Acid spill from 200 litre container in Portsmouth industrial estate sees five fire crews called to the scene

FIRE CREWS were called to an acid spill after a container was knocked over on an industrial estate in Portsmouth last night.

Crews from fire stations in Fareham, Cosham, Southsea, Winchester, and Romsey were called to an industrial unit in Limberline Road in Portsmouth at 7pm.

Staff on the site alerted the emergency services after discovering a large barrel full of acid had been knocked over and was leaking, according to a fire fighter from Cosham Fire Station.

He added: ‘The people on the site didn’t know how the barrel had been knocked over.

‘The was drum had a capacity of about 200 litres – but it was found to be pretty full, so it hadn’t lost a lot of it contents.

‘It was a pretty small leak.

‘We had three fire fighters wear breathing apparatus to up-right the container, and put some putty on a crack.’

No one was injured and no property was damaged as a result of the spill.

It is standard procedure for several crews to be called out to an incident involving a hazardous material as a safety precaution, according to the fire fighter.

Fire crews were on the scene for more than two hours to check that the area was safe.
