College student with cerebral palsy set to walk 6 miles from Fareham to Gosport for cancer charity
A COLLEGE student is determined to take on a charity walk from Fareham to Gosport - and he won’t let his disabilities hold him back.
Harry Weller, who has mild cerebral palsy and is sight-impaired, is currently studying at Fareham College and has decided to take on a six-mile walk for a Gosport charity.
The 16-year-old will set off from college on February 3 to take on his trek to the Harbour Cancer Support centre in Stoke Road, Gosport, who will benefit from all the funds he will be raising.
Fareham resident Harry said: ‘I decided to do it through college and I organised it through my student enrichment officer.
‘I’m looking forward to it, it will be a struggle but I’m going to do it.’
Harry, who went to Portchester Community School, set his fundraising target at £400 but has already smashed this through his Justgiving page and sponsorship forms.
His mum, Karen Weller, said he had been working really hard to set up the challenge and bring in sponsors.
Harbour Cancer Support staff and volunteers will be cheering Harry on every step of the way, as they rely on support from fundraisers to keep the charity going.
Ellie Corp, charity administrator, said: ‘It is amazing that Harry is doing this walk in aid of Harbour Cancer. As a charity we don’t get any funding, we greatly rely on fundraisers like Harry and the support of the community, these are the ones who keep our centre running.
‘Harry helping us in this way helps us to carry on supporting those who are in need of our services. Everyone at the centre wishes Harry the best of luck on his walk!’
Harbour Cancer Support is an independent charity that offers practical and emotional support to anyone affected by any cancer across south-east Hampshire.
The centre opened in 2001 and offers a safe haven for cancer patients, their families, carers and friends to go and spend time in a warm and welcoming environment, in which they can receive much-needed support throughout their cancer journey.
