Despite the menacing weather, Drift Bar on Hayling Island was transformed into a sea of dachshunds who were spoilt with delicious treats, including puppuccinos and popcakes.

It was the latest event held by East Hants Dachshunds, which was raising money for its latest dog charity, Angels Small Paws.

Larissa Carey, founder of the group which now has 700 members after starting with just a handful of people two years ago, said she was blown away by the turnout.

‘Valentine’s Day is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. It’s nice to make it a special occasion where people can sit down with their dachshunds in a restaurant environment,’ she said.

‘Quite a few of our members have their partners in the navy who are away so it’s nice for them to have something to do with their pooch.’

A table for afternoon tea and coffee with treats cost £15 per person with Larissa hoping to raise £250 for the charity which rescues dogs – many of whom were about to be put to sleep – and gives them a loving home.

‘It’s only a small charity but saves so many dogs,’ Larissa said.

Hayley Harris, 41, from Cowplain, rescued two dachshunds from the charity – Dizzy and Fifi. ‘They are enjoying life so much now – they are so spoilt,’ she said. ‘They are such a loving breed and just want to please you.’

A raffle and stalls – including dog food, bags, collars and even a dog photographer – kept everyone entertained.

Havant raw dog food business, Hunters Choice, supported the event. Kirsty and Jed Vale, who have been running the growing business for a year, said: ‘It’s great to meet so many people you have so much in common with.’

Sarah Jane, who runs Dog Walking Bags, which offers a wide variety of handmade crafted bags, said: ‘It’s great fun. All the dogs have such a good time – as well as their owners.’
