The contingent of horse and carts have been seen throughout Portsmouth on Saturday, May 25. They were first spotted in Copnor before setting up at South Parade Pier. Passers by making the most of a sunny bank holiday by the beach will have noticed dozens of them parked up by the railings.

It has created scenes reminiscent of the Wickham Horse Fair which took place on Monday, May 20 and was authorised by the council and attended by the RSPCA. It has not been confirmed if this drive was authorised by the council or the police.

While some onlookers have enjoyed seeing the animals on a sunny day, others have not been quite so happy. One person, who did not want to be named, said: “The horse drive is causing chaos. They have have no respect for other road users. This really shouldn't be allowed.”

The police have been approached for comment.
