Firefighters were called to Highlands Road in Fareham to a small fire in the kitchen of a property.

The blaze started in an extractor fan.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Fire crews from Fareham and Portchester were mobilised at 5.03pm (on Thursday) to a domestic property in Highlands Road.

‘There was a small fire in the kitchen involving the extractor fan.

‘The fire was extinguished using two breathing apparatus and a hose reel.

‘Eight budgies were rescued by firefighters and the stop message came in at 5.40pm.’

It is unknown exactly how the extractor fan ended up involved in the fire.

Nobody was injured in the late afternoon blaze.
