Fawley Power Station: Here is why you may have heard a loud bang in Hampshire this morning

If you live in the Portsmouth area you might have heard a loud explosion earlier this morning.

But fear not it is nothing to worry about.

Residents in Lee-on-the-Solent and in Portsmouth reported hearing the sound at around 10am today.

The bang was caused by what has been called a ‘planned event’ at Fawley Power Station.

Known for its iconic chimney, which stands at 198-metres tall, it is in the process of being demolished in a series of controlled explosions.

Waterside Police tweeted: ‘Don't worry if you heard a loud bang it was the experts from@BrownandMason at Fawley power station in a planned event.’

Once the demolition has been complete, homes are set to be built on the site in a £1bn regeneration scheme.

First opened in 1971, Fawley Power Station was decommissioned in 2013.
