Fishermen are surprised by dolphins from a pod of 100 off the coast of Portsmouth

Two friends out fishing in the water between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight came home without any fish – but say they caught sight of something ‘seriously special’.

The pair spotted a rare spectacle on Sunday morning – when they were ‘surprised’ to find themselves surrounded by dolphins just five minutes away from Langstone Harbour.

Ashton Keiditsch, an advertising photographer from Southsea, said: ‘We saw a fin and started joking that it was a shark.

‘Then we saw more and more – we were surrounded.

‘There must have been more than 100 dolphins in the water.

‘We didn’t catch any fish – but we caught the best sight of the day.’

Southsea resident John Davenport was piloting the sports fisher boat, and decided to slow it down in order to capture the special sight.

The 48-year-old said: ‘I’ve seen porpoise a few times before – but I’ve never seen dolphins in the water.

‘I wondered if I slowed down the boat they would come to the front of the boat, as you see on documentaries an TV shows that can happen.

‘They were actually turning side on and looking up at us.

‘It was very unusual.’

The footage has begun to go viral in the city, with it being viewed more than 2,000 times on various Facebook groups.

Last August, a family on a boating trip spotted around 10 dolphins swimming off the coast of Portsmouth.
