Crews from Havant were called to Swanmore Road in Leigh Park last night to reports of a kitchen fire which firefighters say started due to batteries in a kitchen cupboard.

Crew manager Glenn Kavanagh said: ‘The homeowner told us that she heard a bang and thought it was the electrics and got everyone out the house which is exactly the right thing to do.

‘However we found a plastic bowl of batteries in the cupboard that weren’t in their packaging which means they can connect and short, causing them to heat.

‘So we want to put out the message to people to make sure they are storing batteries safely.’

There were no injuries and damage was limited to the kitchen cupboards.
