Talented teenager Archie McKeown, from Havant, has been belting out tunes to bring a smile to those unable to leave their homes, with his only request being a small contribution to the NHS if people can afford to.

The 19-year-old, who is studying at BIMM in Brighton with hopes of pursuing a career in songwriting, has been keeping track of how much has been donated so far - with more than £750 being raised from his performances.

Archie, who performed at last year’s Victorious Festival on Southsea Common, said: ‘Someone from the Emsworth Alliance said they knew someone who had been stuck inside for four months. After I did that and it seemed to go quite well, I thought I should see if anyone else would like it.

‘It’s been pretty surreal but it’s nice to see people coming together for it, up in their windows. They have all been really appreciative. It’s just nice to get out of the house and do some singing.’

While unable to busk due to lockdown restrictions, Archie has taken on a job at Havant Tesco on the night shift.

He often sticks around outside the supermarket on Saturday mornings after his shift to sing to the waiting shoppers and collects donations in a bucket from those who have enjoyed the entertainment.

Archie, who was a student at Oaklands Catholic School and Sixth Form, said: ‘There’s lots of musicians out of work at the moment and I have been lucky enough to get a job at Tesco as a temp. If I can contribute in any way then I would like to.’

The performer, who had singing lessons at secondary school and has always loved musical theatre, has done around 10 free performances at care homes, sheltered living blocks and more so far, with more booked in for next week.
