Hundreds of fundraisers go the distance to raise money for Alzheimer's charity at Portsmouth Memory Walk

More than 700 walkers are set to raise nearly £64,000 for Alzheimer’s Society after uniting along the seafront to remember and support loved ones affected by dementia.

Helping to cut the ribbon at the starting line, on Saturday, October 8, was Tracy Morrison and her daughter Zoe Ratcliffe from Isle of Wight with baby Ava-Joan. They have experienced the devastating impact of dementia firsthand and were going the extra mile in memory of Tracy’s mum Joan.

Leading the event on the day was Phoebe Gibson, event fundraising co-ordinator for the Memory Walk.

She said: ‘We had glorious sunshine which added to the already fantastic atmosphere at Portsmouth Memory Walk.

‘Crowds walked together for everyone affected by dementia. It was lovely seeing people of all ages, from grannies and grandads to little ones, and even our four-legged furry friends took part. Everyone came together to share their experiences with the common goal of helping people affected by dementia.’

Those taking part completed either a short gentle 3.5km walk or the longer 8km which took walkers along Portsmouth Esplanade.

Fundraisers stepped out to support people affected by dementia through some of the hardest and most frightening times and to help improve their lives.

Kelly Inwood, Alzheimer’s Society area manager, said: ‘We are in awe of our incredible fundraisers, including ribbon cutters Tracy and Zoe, who went above and beyond to raise vital funds and awareness for local people living with dementia.

‘It was extremely moving to see so many people come together to honour or remember their loved ones. Every step taken will help us provide a lifeline of support for as many people affected by dementia as possible.

‘Too many people face dementia alone. With the help of our brilliant fundraisers, we can ensure that everyone affected by dementia can turn to us for expert support through practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the best next step.

‘I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this year’s Memory Walk such a brilliant success.’
