Hoping to make the second lockdown a little easier, Harbour Church Portsmouth has jumped into action to create free food parcels and survival kits for people across the city.

The idea came about as food bank usage has risen throughout the pandemic, and some people who are struggling don’t meet the criteria for Trussell Trust food bank vouchers.

‘Portsmouth people have such a great pride in who they are and that they can look after themselves which is amazing, but we have noticed in a few people it actually stops them asking for help.

‘There’s no shame in asking for it. Everyone is struggling with mental health in lockdown - this is hopefully to make even one day a little bit better.’

Orders can be made by anyone who needs them throughout the four-week restrictions until December 2, and will be delivered to your door.

Food parcels include the basics to create three simple meals for a couple of days, while the student, youth and family packs include games, activities and more targeted items to help these groups out.

Each parcel includes the contact details for other helpful organisations such as mental health charities.

Jess, from Southsea, added: ‘It’s been really sad to see mental health plummet. We want to show people that they’re worth it and they’re loved and we can get through this together.

‘We’re also hoping people will request it for their friends. People might really benefit from one but think they don’t need it.

‘For some people it’s the weirdest and darkest time and the only way we’ll get through it is through kindness.’

Other services offered by Harbour Church include the food bank, Safe Harbour meals for the street community and various forms of help for residents whether it’s collecting a prescription or phoning for a chat.
